Welsh Music for Flute, Viola and Harp

Wednesday 4 March 2026

Join us for a concert of music from Wales performed by Welsh viola player Mabon Llyr Rhyd, National Eisteddfod award-winner Aisha Palmer on harp, and flautist Rebecca Rouch.

This concert is a chance to hear lesser-known music alongside familiar Welsh traditional tunes for the combo of viola, flute and harp, a trio with a distinctive timbre where the viola bridges the gap between smooth flute and plucked harp.

William Mathias was a key figure in Welsh music in the second half of the twentieth century. He was head of music at the University of Wales, Bangor, and founded the North Wales International Music Festival. But his Zodiac Trio has its origins in the South, as a commission from the Vale of Glamorgan Festival. This inventive and otherworldly piece has movements inspired by three signs of the Zodiac. If you’re a Pisces, Aries or a Taurus then you’re in luck.

The programme will also feature music by renowned Welsh composer Grace Williams and Welsh traditional tunes including Myfanwy, Suo Gân, and Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn.

This celebration of Welsh composers will be presented bilingually. Come along to hear Welsh folk-favourites arranged for harp trio and explore some lesser-known gems from Wales’ rich musical heritage.
