Traditions Reimagined: Roots Across the Pond
Take a journey from ancient Wales to modern day America and back again, as we explore the deep links between Welsh and American music.
This rip-roaring tour through a multitude of musical styles takes you from traditional Welsh music to contemporary compositions and barnstorming hoe downs.
You’ll hear familiar pieces arranged for string quartet, including Joseph Parry’s Myfanwy and Ervin Rouse’s Orange Blossom Special, which became the title track of a 1965 Johnny Cash album. Then we have striking new music drawing from tradition, including Katie Jenkins’ Cerddoriaeth i Bronwyn, inspired by Richard Llewellyn’s novel How Green Was My Valley.
The concert has been curated by Sinfonia Cymru’s Welsh violinist Thomas Mathias to reimagine what tradition and heritage mean, showing the diversity and depth of composers from Wales and the United States.
