Opportunities

Calling all writers!

Published Tuesday 8 November 2022

Sinfonia Cymru plans a schools project in Powys every Spring Term and we are looking for opportunities to collaborate with a writer on the spring 2023 project.

Each February / March Sinfonia Cymru works with 6 English Language Primary Schools in Powys, delivering a day of songwriting workshops to a KS2 class in each school and they create a song connected to a story. The whole story is then performed in a theatre (Brycheiniog, Wyeside and Hafren) with a narrator and Sinfonia Cymru musicians performing pieces of music connected to the story, including the song each school creates. It’s a really nice way for the pupils to work closely with the musicians at the workshop stage to create their own lyrics and music, and then the rest of the school gets to attend the performance and experience a professional performance in a theatre setting. We also invite all the other schools in the area to the performances, and there are usually other songs in the programme which all the schools learn and then join in during the performances.

This year we would like to engage a writer, who can also narrate the performances. We are open to suggestions of what the story is about, but would like either something that enhances children’s learning about social issues, well being, folklore or something that will help them learn about Wales, the country’s history and culture. They would be working closely with a songwriter to incorporate songs into the story (lyrics to be written by the songwriter alongside the children involved in the project).

The dates of the project are:

Workshops
– Weeks of 27 Feb & 6 March

Performances
– 15 March Wyeside
– 16 March Hafren
– 20 March Brycheiniog

You can see an example of last year’s project here (this was just delivered in schools as we weren’t able to go into theatres last spring).

For more examples of past projects, which were run by Mid Wales Music Trust, please go to this website.

We ask for one side of A4 telling us about your experience as a writer/narrator/actor and with working with young people. You can include ideas for a story but this isn’t essential at this stage.

Fee: We expect this project to take up 5-7 days for writing / planning, and 3 performance days at £225 per day.
