String players! Apply for freelance opportunities with Sinfonia Cymru

Deadline for submissions: Monday 30th May

We are looking for talented musicians under the age of 30 to join our freelance group of young professionals from 2022/23 season onwards.

Our annual programme features an eclectic mix of projects that give our musicians the opportunity to perform in ensembles that range from duos right up to chamber orchestra in concert halls, communities and schools across Wales. We like to perform a range of music in all these contexts, allowing our musicians to cross genres, whether it’s when they’re working with our exciting and internationally renowned guest artists, leading workshops in schools, or when they’re programming projects for us themselves. We are looking for outstanding musicians who bring with them a range of skills – you might be an aspiring orchestral musician, a budding educator or workshop leader, or be comfortable performing in different genres. At Sinfonia Cymru, we love to see what people can do and invest in their strengths.

This year we are looking for string players and to be eligible you should play Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass. You should have completed or be in your final year of an undergraduate music degree and/or have completed or are currently studying for a postgraduate degree in music performance, either at a conservatoire or university. We welcome applications from international students in the UK with a tier 4 Visa.

To apply, visit https://airtable.com/shrmg2bViDCHYIixL and complete the application form by 12pm (GMT) on Monday 30th May 2022. Please be aware that Sinfonia Cymru engages musicians under the age of 30, so please only apply if you will be under the age of 30 on 30th December 2023, to enable us to offer successful candidates work for the rest of that season.

As part of the form, you will be asked to submit recently filmed video footage of you playing either:

  • one piece / extract of solo or accompanied standard repertoire that demonstrates your musical ability. (Total of 5 minutes)
  • OR if you would like to demonstrate a different style of playing, please include an extract of that plus an extract of standard repertoire. (Total of 5 minutes)

Videos should be unedited; you can submit a longer video but please give a time stamp indicating the 5 minutes you would like us to listen to (or shorter extracts if you are submitting 2 pieces). Please upload the footage to either YouTube or Dropbox and include a link to it in the application form. If you are uploading a YouTube video, please ensure it is uploaded privately.

On the basis of this video footage, applicants will be selected for a second round of recorded auditions. For the second round, candidates will be asked to submit a recording of one piece of their own choice, together with a selection of excerpts.
